PENANG : Lush vegetation and beautiful beaches compose the picture of the “pearl of Malaysia” (as the island Penang is widely known) located between the country and Indonesia, they form an invitation to the travellers. The place is full of trees, pepper, beetroots, Indian canes and crystal waters of 13 fathoms depth, as captain Francis Light wrote 250 years ago, when he first stepped his foot on the island. Since the period of the British colonialism and the middle of 1760s, when captain Francis Light established the commercial routes which transformed the island into a big station of product transfer to the whole archipelagos and India, Penang evolved into a modern tourist destination, without loosing the charm of its past. A charm particularly projected on the capital of George Town, maybe the most beautiful city of Malaysia.
Between the sightseeing that a traveller may visit in the city, is the 19 meters Tower of the Clock, built in 1897 and a little bit further the Fort Cornwallis, the place where Francis Light unshipped for the first time. The wooden construction of Francis Light, which decades later was transformed into the main fort, hosts today a gallery of history, a shop with local art craft and an open amphitheatre often used for shows. Located next to the building of the Legislative Force is also the city hall Jalan Padang Kota which is decorated with Corinthian style columns. Everything seems like it has popped out of the pages of a fairy tale book. |
| KUALA LUMPUR : Kuala Lumpur is considered the haven of shopping. Here you will find budget clothes and shoes in big variety. You can also find cameras and computers in low prices. At the busy central market you can shop handicraft, souvenirs, jewellery etc. At the Indian district you can buy sarees, Indian silk, carpets and fabric. |
| What you should be aware of :
Most taxi drivers do not use a meter. Make sure they are going to do so in advance or agree on the cost of the route before starting you journey. Your transportation with tricycle will also need tough negotiations. Do not tap (not even as a joke) anyone on the top of their head, not even a child, because it’s considered to be very offending. If you wish to indicate something, do it with your thumb of your right hand and the rest of the fingers closed towards your palm. The index finger is used only for animals. Visa is not necessary for Greek travellers. Still, you will need to fill in a form with you data during your flight. Museums and other sightseeing in closed places (e.g. the Park of Butterflies) usually open between 09:00 am – 17:00 pm. Most shops open from 10:00 am – 22:00 pm. |
