When refering to successeful schools focus often lies on academic achivement and seldom on achivement in regard of the social and civic goals. One of the reasons for that can be the absence of reliable ways to measure these goals. In the Swedish curriculum from 1994 (Lpo 94) one can read that the task of the public schools is divided in two main categories; Academic goals and Social and Civic goals. One can therefore argue that a school can not be successesful if they don´t achive in relation to both these goals. If interested in successesful schools, one has to look for ways to find and identify them. The academic achivement is usually mesured by the public schools grading system, but a corresponding system for the social and civic goals does not exist. In an empirical study made in twenty-four swedish schools all students in the ninth grade filled out a questionnaire that was constructed for the purpose of trying to measure the achievement regarding the social and civic goals. In this paper data, analysis and experiences from this study will be presented. |
