Ubuntu (Zulu for humanness) is an ancient philosophy or worldview which has its’ roots anchored in traditional African life. Ubuntu is an important philosophy in South Africa being the value base of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, part of the vision and mission of the transformation of the new public service, policy of various government departments, and business philosophy of various companies. Moreover, it forms the appropriate African approach regarding life coping skills. The Ubuntu personality is a reference to the ideal human being as it is manifested in the living of the ancient Ubuntu values. The ideal man, or leader, who according to the Ubuntu worldview possesses all these virtues of Ubuntu, can be described as:
- a kind person
- generous
- living in harmony
- friendly
- modest
- helpful
- humble and
- happy.
In this paper the values, life coping skills and outcomes of these Ubuntu life coping skills are revealed. The paper explains the informal and happy African style of living, which manifests in the way Africans are speaking, singing, dancing, laughing, crying, painting, and sculpturing. Many Africans regard this style of living as unique and peculiar to Africa alone. It is this reference to a certain way of living that makes Ubuntu life so different from life in other cultures. It is difficult to define: it is a natural response flowing from a happy approach to life. |
