The Professional Learning of Headteachers: A Forgotten Species?
O' BRIEN Jim

The potential crisis in the recruitment of Headteachers (school principals) in certain educational systems has led to a series of developments for the preparation and induction of principals. Within the devolved government arrangements in the UK, Scotland has adopted a Standards based approach to the professional learning of teachers including a Standard for Headship and all Headteachers are now expected to meet that Standard. A national group to review Leadership provision has been established to consider issues such as the revision of the Standard for Headship, alternative routes to satisfying the Standard and the role of coaching and mentoring. Often over-looked, existing headteachers have professional learning needs too and this paper will critique proposals on provision, policy and structures being considered in Scotland now that the importance of school headship has been re-asserted. The outcomes of national consultations will be discussed and illustrated.
