Investigating Areas of School Climate in Cyprus Secondary Schools: The Students' Perceptions
PASHIARDI Georgia

School climate could be described as the heart and soul of a school and has attracted increasing attention within many countries because it appears to be a key factor in determining “a school’s success or failure as a place of learning”. Different factors comprise the quality of a school and may include anything from environmental aspects of the school to the personalities of the students and educators, as well as academic performance, levels of physical activity, and the processes and materials used throughout instructional procedures. This study examines three areas of school climate, namely:  the physical environment of the school, the social environment and the learning environment and the basic goal for this piece of research will be to explore and analyze secondary school students’ (8th grade) perceptions about school climate.  The sample consisted of 1500 secondary school students attending schools in the province of Nicosia, Larnaca and Famagusta during the school year 2005-2006.  A questionnaire was utilized for gathering the data.  The questionnaire was designed and pilot-tested specifically for this study.  The questionnaire included fifty three statements related to school climate (physical, social, learning environment) and the participants were asked to respond to each statement using a Likert type scale 1 to 5 (1 means "not at all" and 5 "to a great extent"). The main findings in each area will be discussed in detail and in relation to the Cyprus educational context and recommendations will be made for improvement.
