8th European Women and Sport Conference 2009
‘Embrace the Spirit – Find, Develop, Promote Women in Sport.  New Strategies’
9 – 10 October 2009, Limassol - Cyprus

Welcome by Athina Kyriakidou,
EWS Chair

We are delighted to be hosting the 8th European Women and Sport Conference which will take place in Limassol, Cyprus on 9 – 10 October 2009.  This year’s conference will concentrate on what has been defined as work of the EWS up to now, how to further improve this work (find, develop, promote) and to define strategies for the future.

During the conference, for the first time, a ‘European Women and Sport Award’ will be awarded to a woman who has created a positive change for

women in sport and have achieved success in promoting sport for women.

It is the first time that an EWS conference will be held in Cyprus and for this reason we are aiming at a particularly successful event.  A few and selective personalities have been invited to offer part of their knowledge and experience during the conference.

It will be an honor to have you participate in our conference and I am looking forward to welcoming you all to our beautiful Island.

Athina Kyriakidou
EWS Chair

Address by the  CSO President
Dr Nikos Kartakoullis
Our island is the host country of a very special sport event, the “Women and Sports” 8th European Conference organised by the European “Women and Sports” Committee chaired by Mrs Athena Kyriakidou.
It is an important sport event for both sports in Cyprus and our country in general. Two hundred (200) participants coming from all the European countries to our island as well as the interesting topics to be dealt with in

the context of the Conference, make the event be classified among the high level ones.

The objective of both the European Commission and the National Committees, as derived from the 1994 Brighton Declaration is to identify women and enhance their development, promotion and participation in a wide range of sport disciplines.

The Cyprus Sport Organisation in its capacity as the Supreme Sport Authority in our country, loyal to all the European declarations and decisions, supports indeed the efforts made by the “Women and Sports” Committee and offers its assistance by all means.

I congratulate the organisers and I am sure about the eventual success of the Conference. Furthermore, I have no doubt that all the relevant conclusions will be drawn in the context of such Conference, securing, therefore, sports’ progress and development.

Congratulations and acknowledgements to the European “Women and Sports” Committee for having chosen Cyprus to be the host country of this so important Conference and I address special thanks and congratulations to the Chair person Mrs Athena Kyriakidou.
